HOTEL VIKING ANNOUNCES THE REOPENING OF ITS ORIGINAL VIKING WING LATE APRIL 2007
Renovated Guestrooms and Suites Are Romantic, Luxurious and Extravagantly Appointed
NEWPORT, RI (March 23, 2007) – The award-winning Hotel Viking, situated at the top of Newport’s Historic Hill and a member of the prestigious Historic Hotels of America, will unveil 66 newly renovated rooms in late April.
The $6.2 million design renovation and reconfiguration began in November 2006, and included 78 rooms located in the hotel’s original wing, built in 1926. The project was planned and executed by Dawson Design Associates, Inc.
Mark Gervais, General Manager of Hotel Viking says, “We consider this impressive Viking Wing renovation a dramatic accomplishment, and look forward to unveiling these ultra-luxurious guestroom accommodations to new and old visitors to our property. The newly- redesigned Viking Wing along with all the other special attractions here will ensure the Hotel Viking’s continued reputation as the ultimate boutique hotel destination in Newport.”
When the Viking Wing is unveiled in late April, there will be a total of 209 rooms in the hotel, including the 66 new completely redesigned rooms.
Of these 66 rooms, each of the 10 Mansion Suites is individually designed to capture the essence of one of Newport’s famous mansions, and each is named accordingly from the Chateau to the Marble House to Rosecliff. These distinctive suites, whether they are highlighted with appointments reflecting French Rococo to Victorian, also have their own unique “parlors” – seating areas replete with lush furniture, wood flooring and oriental area carpets. To complete the tribute to a specific regal house, books and photos of the families who once enjoyed a grand life in these coveted homes retell the history of each commemorated mansion. Guests are certain to dream special dreams as they become immersed in the persona of their “own mansion”. Some will want to go “Hotel Viking Mansion Hopping” as they plan their future stays.
All renovated accommodations are spacious and beautifully appointed with Queen Anne and other period furniture depending on the room. They feature king beds with posters or ornately carved headboards, pillow top mattresses, and lush triple-sheeted Egyptian cotton bed linens topped with satin duvets. Multi-textured, warm-hued shades of tapestry, silks, velvets and satins adorn new sumptuous furnishings and stunning drape treatments. Custom wool Axminister carpets made in England add to the elegant feel of Newport’s Gilded Age, quietly present in every room. There is also the all-important nod to contemporary amenities done the Newport way – rooms have LCD televisions, built-in cherry wardrobes; beveled glass doors leading into elegant bathrooms featuring large showers wrapped in ‘pillow’ carved marble and glass mosaic, along with relaxing rainhead showers.
Two very grand Specialty Suites, Kingscote and The Breakers, are the pièces de résistance of the redesign project. In a freshly-conceived salute to Kingscote, the Gothic Revival-style Newport “cottage” landmark, this suite’s personality is a mixture of elements from the East and West – dark, elaborately ornate furniture, balanced by Chinese accents of black lacquer and porcelains, as well as pine plank floors and aged brick walls. Dark hunter greens, rich burgundy, deep bronzes and rich velvets, needlepoint and tapestries have been used throughout the suite.
Like The Breakers Italian Renaissance summer villa itself, the Hotel Viking’s new Breakers Suite is its grandest and largest. Guests who have the opportunity to luxuriate in this opulent suite may feel like a Vanderbilt of yesteryear during their stay. The main parlor features a formal dining area with a chandelier, focal point fireplace, wood parquet floors, hand-knotted area rug and elaborate tassel-trimmed drapery. Greens, pale corals, creams and caramel hues are used to accentuate the regal furnishings showcased by chinoiserie and gold and silver detailing. The Breakers Suite features a separate master bedroom and a private adjacent guest bedroom with its own sitting area – accommodations ideal for a family and formal Newport entertaining at its best.
Along with the renovation of the Viking Wing, the property has given all of its much sought-after meeting and banquet spaces a facelift with new wall coverings, carpet and floor length draperies. This year’s spring and summer seasons and beyond now offer guests a new diversity of guestroom and suite choices along with a sense of history, a unique Newport location, a friendly ambience and professional service with attention to detail that have made the Hotel Viking so popular throughout its 80-year history.
Hotel Viking, located at the top of Newport’s Historic Hill and a member of Historic Hotels of America, is convenient to Newport’s many attractions, including Newport Harbor and Waterfront. With the character and service of a small boutique hotel, it showcases 209 rooms and suites resonating Old World charm, yet updated with modern amenities. Hotel Viking features the luxurious SpaTerre; fine dining at One Bellevue; over 14,000 square feet of meeting and special occasion space; an historic chapel on property; a 24-hour business center; an indoor pool/whirlpool; and fitness center.
