
Hotel Viking, Newport, Rhode Island - Environmental Policy
The Hotel Viking is an environmentally conscious hotel. We not only aim to provide exceptional quality services for our guests, but are committed to the implementation of proactive measures to help protect and sustain the local, national and global environment for future generations. By working together we can create a safe and clean environment and ensure that environmental issues are kept at the forefront of everyone’s mind and given proper attention at all times. Some of the steps we have taken to be ‘green’ are:
- Free parking for hybrid cars
- Use 30% recycled paper and making double sided photo copies whenever possible
- 25%-75% of our produce, dairy and meats are from Rhode Island farms and our seafood aligns with sustainable recommendations
- 75%-100% of our salmon is wild, not farm raised
- Use green seal certified chemicals and biodegradable detergents that contain no phosphates
- Recycle fluorescent light bulbs, paper, cardboard, toner and ink jet cartridges
- Eliminated the use of Styrofoam throughout the hotel
- Recycle used cooking oil with a biodiesel company
- Adopted a water conservation policy for guest room laundry
- Upgraded all toilets to be 1.6 gallons per flush
- Use compact fluorescent light bulbs in guest rooms and wherever possible
- Compliant with the RI Diesel Engine Anti-Idling Act
- Grow herbs for use in all food and beverage outlets
- Installed programmable thermostats
- Formed Environmental Committee that meets regularly
Principles
- We will raise awareness with our employees regarding protecting the environment and give clear guidance on how they can assist the operation in minimizing the hotel's environmental impact. We will also encourage our employees to practice this philosophy outside of the hotel.

- We will seek to gain support from our customers, contractors and suppliers to ensure that they are made aware of our environmental policy.
- We will be committed to conserve natural resources by ensuring the responsible use of energy, water, waste and raw materials.
- We will actively encourage engagement with the local community on environmental awareness.
- We will continuously seek to improve the impact of all of our environmental principles through an active environmental committee consisting of employees from all levels. The committee helps identify and explore new ideas and opportunities as well as strategies to accomplish them.
- We will actively demonstrate the claims within our environmental policy.
