The Hotel Viking is an environmentally conscious hotel. We not only aim to provide exceptional quality services for our guests, but are committed to the implementation of proactive measures to help protect and sustain the local, national and global environment for future generations. By working together we can create a safe and clean environment and ensure that environmental issues are kept at the forefront of everyone’s mind and given proper attention at all times. Some of the steps we have taken to be ‘green’ are:
- Over 30% of our purchased electricity comes from hydroelectric
- Adopted an environmental policy
- Free parking for hybrid cars
- Using biodegradable keycards
- Using 30% recycled paper
- Making double sided photo copies whenever possible
- Recycling laser and ink jet cartridges
- Recycling electronics
- 100% Organic product line in the spa
- Use local seafood whenever possible
- Using some green seal certified chemicals
- Using biodegradable detergents that contain no phosphates
- Reduced year over year trash tonnage since 2007
- Recycling paper
- Recycling cardboard
- Recycling fluorescent light bulbs
- Eliminated the use of Styrofoam throughout the hotel
- Recycling used cooking oil with a local bio-diesel company
- Adopted a water conservation policy for guest room laundry
- Reduced year over year water usage since 2008
- Upgraded toilets to be 1.6 gallons or less per flush
- Upgraded sinks to 0.5 gallons per minute
- Converted to compact fluorescent light bulbs in guest rooms and wherever else possible
- Reduced year over year electricity consumption since 2006
- Reduced year over year natural gas consumption from 2006
- Complying with the RI Diesel Engine Anti-Idling Act
- Growing our own organic herbs for the restaurant
- Eliminated water bottle coolers
- Formed an environmental committee that is sure to find more ways to be green!
- Using environmentally conscience Starbucks coffee
- Using organic fertilizer and pest control for all landscaping
- Using bulk dispensers for shower amenities
- All guest room mini refrigerators are Energy Star rated
- Subsidize the employee purchase of compact fluorescent bulbs with the trade in of a standard incandescent bulb
- Currently testing the feasibility of automated hand dryers to eliminate the consumption of paper
- Recycling guest room soap
Principles
- We will raise awareness with our employees regarding protecting the environment and give clear guidance on how they can assist the operation in minimizing the hotel's environmental impact. We will also encourage our employees to practice this philosophy outside of the hotel.
- We will always aim to exceed any environmental legislation. We have a genuine desire to protect our environment.
- We will seek to gain support from our customers, contractors and suppliers to ensure that they are made aware of our environmental policy.
- We will be committed to conserve natural resources by ensuring the responsible use of energy, water, waste and raw materials.
- We will actively encourage engagement with the local community on environmental awareness.
- We will continuously seek to improve the impact of all of our environmental principles through an active environmental committee consisting of employees from all levels. The committee helps identify and explore new ideas and opportunities as well as strategies to accomplish them.
- We will actively demonstrate the claims within our environmental policy.
